Tarte Out of Touch?

The Tarte brand trip, how to keep your accounts safe, and more.

The Influencer Newsletter

Happy Tuesday! Thanks for joining us this week. We’re so happy you’re here! This week we’re covering the controversial Tarte brand trip, continuing our series on how to protect your accounts from being deleted, and how to analyze your Instagram insights. We’ll finish it off by highlighting one of our team member’s favorite creator.

Without further ado…

Tarte Cost-metics

Last weekend, Tarte Cosmetics hosted their controversial brand trip inviting influencers from all over to relax with them in Bora Bora for the weekend. Tarte has hosted over 20 brand trips and is a trailblazer in the realm of luxury influencer experiences. PR packages were sent to the influencers before they left including a Nike Jordans, a Béis tote bag, a Canon G7 X and not to mention they were flown out on private jets.

Some critiques have questioned the appropriateness and timing of these lavish excursions given prevailing economic conditions, while others have highlighted instances where influencers seemed unfamiliar with Tarte's products.

Maureen Kelly, Founder and CEO of Tarte Cosmetics, remains steadfast in her belief in the value of these trips for nurturing relationships with creators and consumers alike.

Kelly explains, "Our vision was to invite visionary creators from around the globe to join us in an intimate setting, fostering personal connections and strengthening the narrative behind the brand."

Bulletproofing Your Business: Part II

The FTC’s cracking down, here’s the second step to protecting yourself.

The FTC protects citizens from deceptive and unfair business practices. It’s crucial to stay up to date on their guidelines regarding paid partnerships to keep your accounts in good standing and out of jeopardy. Termly has a great summary of their guidelines you can find here, but we’ll give you the rundown too.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Influencers need to be transparent with their followers about any posts, videos, or statements that involve a material partnership.

  • Don’t assume that your followers are already aware of your brand collaborations. You need to disclose it every time.

  • Don’t hide or make your disclosure unclear. Make them apparent and bold.

  • When posting on Instagram, make sure to use the “Paid Partnership with…” feature.

For influencers, what works, and more importantly, what doesn’t is crucial to your success. Instagram Insights provides a free, better understanding of who your account is reaching and how to maximize your potential.

Let’s break it down:

To find your insights make sure you have your account set to professional. Once that’s done, on your profile page a button labeled professional dashboard will appear, click on that button.

Welcome to your insights. First things first. Let’s see who you’re reaching.

Click on accounts reached. Here you’ll find the ratio of followers vs non-followers that have come across your content. You can also see what content of yours is doing the best, and what performs better, stories, posts, or reels.

Next, let’s look at your engagement.

Click on accounts engaged. Here you’ll see who’s engaging in your content, this includes likes, saves, and shares. Use this information to post more of what is doing well, whether that’s reels, carousels, static posts, or stories. You can see how your content did this month compared to last month, and make any changes to constantly get better.

Next week, we’ll examine individual post analytics and how to take advantage of follower demographics. Happy analyzing!

Rin Rudd: Travel Influencer

My favorite influencer is Rin Rudd. She’s been traveling solo for the past 3 years and is always doing something new and exciting. During COVID, she started a ring business that took off and allowed her to travel for months at a time. Anytime she needed extra money she would go home, sell a bunch of rings, and then jet off again. She’s traveled to Thailand, Costa Rica, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Greece, and is now in Nicaragua.

Kristin Kennihan: Newsletter Writer

I love how carefree and go-with-the-flow she is. You never know where she’s going next and I admire how free-spirited she is. She truly is living the traveler’s dream!

Rin began posting on social media about a year ago and has been sharing her traveling journey non-stop. Being able to follow her journey as a content creator and traveler has been so much fun!
